The impact that coffee has on your health: Review of my Favourite Vegan Coffee Alternative

Coffee is a drink loved by many, and rightly so. I mean, it actually holds the ability to get even the laziest people out of bed and if you ask me, that’s pure magic right there. It’s become a part of our day to day culture. I mean, how many people schedule their day around coffee? We’ve become accustom to the different varieties of coffee and the home technology available is constantly advancing. I ran a poll on my Twitter (@BeccaLou_96, be sure to follow) and I found that around 73% of my followers drink the stuff. With stats like that, I think the coffee industry is safe from collapsing!

However, it has been proven that regularly reaching for the lattes can effect your health both physically and mentally. Some of the impacts coffee has on your health includes:

  • Weight gain
  • Increase in stress levels
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia

With this just a snippet of the impacts too much coffee consumption has on a person, it’s no wonder why so people are looking to ditch the beans and look for a new favourite drink.

As you may know if you’ve read my Get to Know Me post (check it out here) I don’t drink coffee. I generally like the taste and the idea of grabbing a cup in the morning to wake me up sounds amazing, but if I drink it I eventually end up with the worst headache. I’ve tried different strengths of coffees, including decaff, but I still end up needing to lay down. Weirdly I am absolutely fine with iced coffee, but I’m assuming the amount of sugar takes away from the caffeine. But behold, I have found an alternative to coffee!

Whole Earth Organic No Caf Coffee Alternative is exactly what it says on the tin, a coffee alternative made with Italian barley and ground chicory. The product is vegan friendly and grown organically, so it’s great if you’re sticking to a vegan diet. The drink is made the same way you would make instant coffee, and on first impressions smells exactly the same as actual coffee! It can be drank black or with milk, including soya.

But how does it taste? Well, drum roll please it tastes exactly the same as the real stuff! So much so that I have tricked people and given them a cup this rather than coffee and they were none the wiser! I would say that the consistency is quite watery, so that might be a give away that it’s not real coffee, but other than that I think it is a great coffee substitute!

The organic product is available at Holland and Barrett for around £2.99 so it’s definitely worth a try! Please check the ingredients if you have any allergies, and if you have any medical conditions or are pregnant; I would check to see whether this product is suitable before consuming.

Would you ever consider giving up coffee? If you’re thinking of ditching the coffee for good, I hope that this alternative can help you through the transition and beyond. Or if you decide that Chicory isn’t for you, there’s always tea. Tea is good, tea will never hurt your feelings. Tea will always be there for you. I love tea. You should too. Right I’m off to grab a cuppa!
